About Capital City National Showcase

The Capital City National Showcase is a high school basketball event founded by Andre Hopson, a Washington, D.C.–based youth sports operator and entrepreneur. The showcase was created to bring elite national competition into the District and was intentionally designed to stay rooted in the local basketball culture that defines the DC, Maryland, Virginia  (DMV) area.

The showcase was uniquely hosted at a D.C. public school, rather than defaulting to private venues often associated with elite events. That decision reflected Andre’s goal of making the event accessible to the community while still delivering a nationally relevant level of play.

The Challenge

Launching a first-year showcase with national ambitions presented immediate operational and financial hurdles. Like many new operators, Andre entered the process with a clear vision for the matchups he wanted to create, but quickly encountered the realities that come with executing an event at that level.

Attracting top programs required significant investment, while NCAA sanctioning and compliance added layers of complexity that are often underestimated. Coordinating lodging and transportation for traveling teams further increased the scope of the work. All of this needed to be managed without losing the community-first spirit of the event or pushing it into exclusive environments that felt disconnected from D.C.'s basketball roots.

The Solution

Andre partnered with Fastbreak AI during the inaugural Capital City National Showcase to support the operational execution of the event. As a new operator navigating and creating new processes, Andre relied on Fastbreak’s partnership and software platforms to help manage the behind-the-scenes complexity that comes with hosting elite high school programs.

Together, the teams worked through NCAA sanctioning and compliance requirements, coordinated travel and lodging for visiting teams and handled transportation logistics across multiple participants. This support made it possible for Andre to bring nationally ranked teams together and deliver a prime-time matchup.

Andre was candid about the realities new operators face when building events of this scale:

“You step into creating an event with the biggest and brightest dreams: who you want to play, what teams you want to bring to your city; and then you realize the cost associated with those dreams. I don’t think I would have been able to pull this event off without [Fastbreak] coming to the table with me.”

The Impact

In its first year, the Capital City National Showcase achieved what many new events struggle to execute: delivering elite, nationally relevant competition while staying rooted in the local community. Andre was able to turn an ambitious vision into a fully executed event.

Fastbreak’s involvement made it possible to bring the number one high school team in the country at the time, Sierra Canyon, to Washington, D.C. for a prime-time matchup against Bishop McNamara—a perennial powerhouse from the region. For a first-year showcase, securing and hosting that level of competition required not only financial coordination, but deep familiarity with compliance, logistics and team travel expectations.

Just as important, Fastbreak’s support allowed the event to remain anchored in the community. The showcase was hosted at Coolidge High School, a D.C. public school, rather than shifting into private or exclusive venues that often define elite showcases.

Andre shined a light on the importance of this level of inclusion, stating,  “A lot of these events of high-caliber talent have become elitist culture: only for private schools or certain arenas. I wanted this to be about the basketball community, but also the community as a whole.

From Andre’s perspective, Fastbreak’s value extended beyond individual features to the experience of partnership. He described the platform as intuitive across modules and emphasized the accessibility of the Fastbreak team when challenges arose:

It was a seamless transition from the travel component to the ticketing component. Whenever there was a problem or an issue, these guys were always just a phone call or email away.

By helping Andre navigate unfamiliar territory as a new operator, Fastbreak enabled the Capital City National Showcase to deliver a successful inaugural event that balanced elite competition, operational execution and community access.

Impact & execution highlights:

  • 16 elite teams executed in year one, including Sierra Canyon, DeMatha, Archbishop Carroll, and St. James
  • 7+ marquee games across two days, including a prime-time matchup with the #1 team in the country
  • Team travel and lodging managed end-to-end, removing major operational lift for a first-year operator
  • NCAA sanctioning and compliance secured, enabling participation from top-tier programs
  • Integrated, user-friendly ticketing, reducing operational friction during a high-stakes event
  • Elite competition hosted at a D.C. public school, preserving community access without sacrificing quality.
  • Hands-on Fastbreak support, enabling confident execution of a complex, multi-team showcase

Looking Ahead

Looking forward, Andre envisions the Capital City National Showcase continuing to grow in scale and visibility. His goal is to bring teams from across the country, and potentially beyond, to Washington, D.C., and eventually see the event feature nationally televised games.

With a proven foundation in place, the showcase is positioned to expand while remaining aligned with its original mission: delivering elite competition without losing its connection to the local community.
